A 44 year-old man has died hours after being recovered from the River Foyle by Foyle Search and Rescue.
Shortly after 9.30am the PSNI received a report that a man had been fallen from the Foyle Bridge into the river. Foyle Search and Rescue were alerted and recovered the man who was then taken to hospital.
Minutes after the incident four vehicles were involved in a collision on the Waterside bound carriageway of the bridge. Police said they believe the two incidents were linked.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area during the incident and the Waterside bound lane was closed for a time while the emergency services were at the scene.
The lane was reopened to traffic before lunchtime.
It was announced that the man recovered from the river had died in Altnagelvin hospital. The PSNI said they would not be releasing his name.
