The grandson of a Derry man says speculation over the identity of the mystery vessel found in the Foyle has re-ignited memories of a childhood story and a gift from his grandfather.
Paul Simpson from Scunthorpe, whose family hail from Derry, contacted the ‘Journal’ after reading details about the discovery of the craft on the bed of the Foyle earlier this week.
He says his grandfather, Samuel Simpson, who served in the Home Guard in Derry during the Second World War, gave him a wallet as a child - and said it had come from a submarine in the Foyle.
“My granda Samuel (Sammy) Simpson gave me a wallet many years ago and told me it had come from a submarine that was on the bottom of the Foyle. I still have the wallet and you can tell that it has been in water at some point.”
Paul remembers little of the story about the wallet.
“It must be at least 25 years ago that he gave me the wallet. I seem to think he said it (the wallet) was German but I’m not sure.
“I would be very interested in knowing more about what they find down there,” he says.
