One of the busiest streets in the Bogside area of the city will be closed over the next two weekends for major roadworks.
Westland Street will be closed this weekend and the following weekend while resurfacing work is carried out. The road will be closed on April 5 and 6 and April 12 and 13.
The street, which links Lecky Road/Rossville Street with Lone Moor Road is one of the main routes through the area and is used by thousands of motorists and pedestrians each day.
Sinn Féin councillor Colly Kelly advised people living in the area and motorists who use the road to be aware of the closure and to plan an alternative route.
“I would just like to alert both residents and motorists about the closure of Westland Street over the next two weekends.
“With its closure it will undoubtedly increase traffic along Lone Moor Road, Laburnum Terrace and along the Lecky Road onto Rossville Street,” he said.
Colr. Kelly also appealed to motorists to show patience during the roadworks.
“There is always a very high volume of traffic travelling through both areas. I would urge motorists to show due care and attention whilst this important work is being carried out,” he said.
Roadworks have already been carried out on Westland Street with footpaths on both sides of the streets being replaced.
