Charles and Camilla to tour Donegal tomorrow

Charles and Camilla will visit various locations around the county on Wednesday- the final day of the three-day visit beginning tomorrow.

The visit was requested by the British government following on from a visit to Mullaghmore and other locations last year.

The Prince and Duchess’s second official visit to Ireland also follows the State Visits of Queen Elizabeth to Ireland in May 2011 and of The President of Ireland Michael Higgins to Britain in April 2014.

First up on their itinerary will be Donegal Town, where the Royal couple will visit local company Magee’s and peruse the world-famous tweed the company have been producing in Donegal for 150 years.

They will then travel to the Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

Charles will meet local entrepreneurs and learn more about the Institute’s cross-border programmes, while Camilla will visit a local school.

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Ciaran Brogan, will be hosting a special welcome reception at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology with invited guests from all sectors in the County including youth, sport, arts, culture, heritage, agriculture/ aquaculture, community/voluntary, business, tourism and the Gaeltacht.

The Donegal trip will end with a visit to Glenveagh Castle, where the couple will tour the gardens and meet children who have been learning about some of the conservation work which takes place in the National Park.

Speaking about the visit, Councillor Brogan said: “This is a great opportunity to welcome both the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to Donegal and to showcase all that the County has to offer.

“It will also be an opportunity to demonstrate first hand excellent examples of cross-border collaborative working and how this approach has contributed to building positive and productive relationships in a number of important areas with our cross-border partners.”

Prior to arriving in the County, the couple will take in a number of engagements north of the border in and around Belfast.

Those organising the visit said it will “recognise the warm friendship that exists between both countries, promoting understanding of their respective heritage and celebrating the best that each has to offer”.
