Jonathan Concannon (27) died suddenly on Sunday night and Funeral Mass took place at St Joseph’s Church in Galliagh on Wednesday.

Jonathan was described by Fr Michael McCaughey during the poignant service as a much respected young man who was “gentle, private and courteous”.

The Galliagh community have also been praised for rallying around the family, especially Jonathan’s younger brother Edward.

Fr McCaughey said that people have shown great kindness of spirit “at a time of great sadness and confusion” for the Concannon family.

“What has been tremendous is the community, the neighbours at Altcar Park, the family circle, rallied around to help Edward cope with his loss.”

Jonathan’s father John Concannon has been missing since last November, with searches continuing every week to try and locate him. Mr Concannon, who has dementia, was last seen getting off a bus in Lenamore and walking in the direction of the border. It is believed he may have taken the wrong bus home at Foyle Street depot and become confused.

Some of the search crews were among those who attended Jonathan’s Funeral on Wednesday.

Fr McCaughey said: “The community spirit expressed over the last few months was reflected in that shown over the last few days.”
