Two convicted with benefit fraud in Derry

Two women were convicted at Derry Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Majella Heaney (40) of Glenabbey Drive in Derry claimed Income Support, totalling £2,307 while failing to declare employment. She was given a one month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £31.

Wendy McMonagle (45) of Glenabbey Drive, Derry claimed Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £10,438 while failing to declare employment. She was given a three month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £43.

Both are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
