Trade union Unite will stage protests against controversial medical assessments in the north west this week.

The protests will be held outside the ATOS and Social Security offices in Derry and Strabane today at 10.30am.

The local protests are part of a UK-wide “day of action” by Unite against the assessments.

Unite Community Coordinator Robert Montgomery called for an end to the controversial assessments.

“Unite in the Community believe that ATOS assessments are unjust and these assessments affect the most vulnerable in our community, we believe ATOS should be abolished,” he said.

A number of local groups, including Derry cancer support charity, The Pink Ladies, have been staging ongoing protests against the ATOS assessments, which are carried out on Strand Road at the junction of Fletcher Street.
