Community workers in the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank areas teamed up with a local pharmacist this week to reduce the amount of unused and unwanted medication in the area.

The move was promoted by fears of abuse of prescription medication in the city in recent weeks.

It allows local residents to responsibly dispose of all out of date, unwanted or unused medication.

Members of the Ballymagraorty and Hazelbank Community Partnership (BHCP) worked with Bradley’s Pharmacies to carry out the unique unwanted medicine collection.

Roxanne Nixon from BHCP said the initiative is in response to a number of break ins in the area recently where prescription drugs have been stolen. “In recent months there have been breaks ins within the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank area with the intent on stealing any medicine they can find. With the growing trend of over the counter medicines being misued it is important that we take as much of these types of medicines out of circulation before they end up on the streets in the wrong hands,” she said.

The community worker also encouraged people to consider whether they need medication or not.

“We are trying to encourage residents not to order prescriptions if the medicine is not needed,” she said.

She also said the scheme is carried out on a confidential basis. “All types of medicines are welcome we just ask that for confidentiality reasons that those wishing to use the service remove their names and addresses from all packaging.”

Medicines can be left at BHCP offices at 2, Dunculce Court, Inch View and Farland Way Common Room, and also at Bradley’s Pharmacy in the city.
