The cause of an explosion in Derry remains a mystery, police have said.

A PSNI spokeswoman says police have now reduced the cordons in the area and residents are now returning to their homes.

She says searches have also been narrowed down.

“The focus of our search will be at the car park at Quarry steps and Quarry steps itself – this area is sealed off and will remain so for possibly the next few days. This will not have any impact on residents.

“The cause of the explosion is still being determined,” she says.

Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes last night and Fountain Hill, Spencer Road and the roads between Chapel Road and Spencer Road remained closed this morning.

The “loud explosion” was heard at around 5pm last evening (January 10).
