VIDEO - Fire at Derry restaurant

There was widespread traffic disruption in Derry on Wednesday afternoon after police were forced to close Queen’s Quay after a fire broke out close to a restaurant.

A PSNI spokesperson told The Derry Journal: “Queens Quay in Derry has been closed from Queens Quay roundabout to the Harbour Square roundabout due to a fire at commercial premises in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

Fire-fighters from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) attended the scene and used breathing apparatus to enter buildings nearby.

The NIFRS erected a cordon close the blaze stopping traffic and pedestrians from entering the area.

One eyewitness told the Derry Journal: “I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

“The smoke was really thick and it covered a big part of the River Foyle. It was so thick you couldn’t even see the Peace Bridge.”
