Video:Pensioner ‘seconds from death’ after tree collapses

A pensioner living in Derry’s Waterside has spoken of her lucky escape after being “minutes away from death” when a tree collapsed into her back garden.

65-years-old Emer Fraser had been in her back yard getting a number for a local oil company from a sticker on her oil tank at around 11am this morning.

Seconds later when she returned back inside her house, the tree collapsed.

Speaking to the Journal she said: “I can’t believe it. I was seconds away from being killed. I’m still in shock about what happened. I think other people in the area need to be aware of the dangers. With the kind of windy weather we’ve been having recently this is a real worry.

“There are people with young families in the area and I’d be concerned that something might happen to children out playing. It’s very very dangerous.”

The Waterside woman said she’d been in touch with a builder about the issue and hoped it would be resolved quickly.

“What’s worrying me now is that I have no access to my oil tank and that’s something I’ll be hoping to get rectified as soon as possible.”
