Residents in Cromore Gardens in Creggan described the news that a 19 year-old woman’s body had been discovered in a flat in the area as “shocking”.

One resident, who did not want to be named, described the street as “quiet” and said she was “shocked” when she heard what had happened.

“This wee street is so quiet - I am completely shocked at the news.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the wee girl’s family - this is just awful news to be waking up to.”

SDLP MLA for Foyle Pat Ramsey described the incident as “tragic”.

“I was shocked and appalled to learn this morning that a young woman has been found dead in the Creggan area of the city. This is a truly tragic incident, made all the worse because of the young age of the victim who had her whole life ahead of her.

“Residents living nearby Cromore gardens have been left reeling from this news. I know that people of Derry will now rally around the family of the victim at this incredibly difficult time.

“I want to pass on my sincere condolences to the family of this young woman who will be understandably devastated at the sudden loss of a loved one.”

A PSNI spokesperson told the Journal: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-year-old woman in the Creggan area of Derry. A 21-year-old man has been arrested. There are no further details at present.”
