The creation of 30 new jobs by a Derry software company has been welcomed in the city.
Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney said local firm 8 over 8’s expansion could “attract interest from new companies sourcing locations for investment and job creation.”
The company is to create 30 new jobs with an investment of £2.7million.
“I welcome the news that the company 8over8 is to create thirty new jobs with a £2.7million investment. Every new job that comes to this city is valued,” Mr McCartney said.
“Hopefully with Derry being City of Culture 2013 and with all the publicity surrounding it, it will open up a lot of other opportunities for firms in the Derry area. And attract interest from new companies sourcing locations for investment and job creation.”
SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood also welcomed today’s announcement.
“This is some welcome news on the jobs front, news which is much needed and news which we need a lot more of.
“What is particularly important about this announcement is that it is precisely the kind of sector which Derry is trying top build a name in. The Creative Industries, particularly those in the digital economy, are primed for growth. It is important that we do everything possible to invest in the infrastructure needed to facilitate.
“No doubt many will say that 20 jobs is a drop in the ocean when contrasted with the ongoing crisis of unemployment which this city faces. They are right.
“The days, though, of job announcements in their hundreds or even thousands are probably over, particularly for the skilled jobs which we hope to attract.
“It is these small, flexible and innovative companies which we must attract and grow’.
“I hope this announcement by 8over8 will set in train similar announcements and that this good news story is not isolated amidst the current reality of wide-scale unemployment,” he said.
