Malin Head Weather Station in Donegal last month recorded its wettest May in 123 years and its second wettest since records began in 1885.

The latest monthly report from Met Eireann showed the local weather station recorded the highest long-term average rainfall for the country at 137mm (235%).

The station also recorded the highest monthly wind speed for May at 16.4 knots (30km/hr), as well as the month’s highest 10-minute wind speed and highest gust at 40 knots (74kph) and 52 knots (96kph) respectively.

All monthly mean air temperatures for May were below average, with the majority of places reporting differences from long-term averages of more than -1.0°C. Most stations across the country (with the exception of a few in western and southern coastal counties) had their coolest May conditions in five to 19 years.
