With almost five decades of touring behind them, Ireland’s most popular folk group, The Wolfe Tones, will return to the Millennium Forum on Easter Saturday, April 23, with their ‘Spirit of the Nation’ show.
Now in their 48th year on the road, The Wolfe Tones continue to tour the world, with 2011 seeing the group travel to the U.S., Spain, Australia, UK, Italy, France, Germany and the Middle East.
With the group’s 50th anniversary year fast approaching, a feature length documentary charting The Wolfe Tones amazing career is nearing completion.
Plans are also at an advanced stage for the release of a brand new studio album, including many new compositions from one of Ireland’s most prolific songwriters, Brian Warfield.
Having performed in Derry City since the 1960’s, The Wolfe Tones have enthusiastically put their support firmly behind Derry’s bid to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2012 / 2013.
Brian Warfield of The Wolfe Tones said, “We have always considered it to be a very special experience when we perform in Derry, and the reception we have received in the city over the years always stands out in my memory.”
He went on: “Derry is one of the first locations we ever performed in the north away back in the mid 1960’s and we consider it a huge honour to be able to take to the stage of a venue such as the Millennium Forum so many years later.”
After 48 years on the road, the performance of arguably Ireland’s greatest ballad singer, Tommy Byrne, will be one of those hair-raising moments at the Easter Saturday show.
They get virtually no airplay, they continue to be shunned by TV broadcasters north and south, but The Wolfe Tones continue to pack venues given their massive popularity.
The Forum show once again promises to be packed to the rafters on Easter Saturday. So if Irish ballads performed at their very best is your thing, then The Wolfe Tones will give you a night to remember on April 23!
The Wolfe Tones will appear at the Millennium Forum on Easter Saturday, April 23, 8pm.
Tickets, £17.50/19.50, can be purchased by calling the Forum Box Office on: 71. 264455 or online via: www.millenniumforum.co.uk.
