A magical gypsy style wagon designed to promote arts and storytelling in Derry has just had its official launch.

The Wonder Wagon, is a unique, vibrant, beautifully colourful, vehicle designed to travel the streets bringing arts to the people in an inspirational and uplifting setting.

It was launched at the Gasyard followed by a family fun evening.

The design of the vehicle is inspired by the old fashioned travelling caravans and before its arrival in the city the wonder wagon spent time travelling some of Europe’s top music gatherings including the famous Glastonbury Festival.

The project, which is supported by the Legacy Fund through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Derry City and Strabane District Council, is the first of its kind for the City and will host a range of events including comic book workshops, story-telling, puppet theatre, crafts and other art adventures as it travels around.

Roísín McDonough, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “ The marvellous and thrilling Wonder Wagon project encourages a great degree of community engagement and reaches out to people across this vibrant city helping to tackle social exclusion.”

Karen Cassidy co ordinator of the Wonder Wagon says, “It’s really quite magical watching the transformation in people after they enter the Wonder Wagon and take time out to engage with crafts, or listen to a mystical story. It’s like reconnecting with themselves and leaving the busy noisy lives we live in outside for a moment.”

Claire Heaney-Mc Kee, from Bluebell Arts Project, said: “The Wonder Wagon will take us on an exciting journey, one filled with curiosity & creativity. We aim to capture the imaginations of people right across the City as we take art to the streets. The Wonder Wagon will be our creative carriage, connecting with communities through a well-developed outreach strategy, educating & inspiring as it roams.”

A total of 34 projects have received funding under the Legacy Fund programme to a total value of £900,000 from 2014/15 to 2016/17.

The Wonder Wagon can be hired for various events, including: weddings, private parties. Schools. Youth clubs, community centres. Anyone interested in booking the Wonder Wagon should contact Karen on 028 7126 2812 or email thewonderwagon@gmail.com. Find us on Facebook: Wonder Wagon.
