A stage show exploring the songs of Woody Guthrie in American 1930s will come to The Playhouse next week.

Singer and Professor of American Literature Will Kaufman, who was consultant to Johnny Depp and Douglas Brinkley on a recently discovered novel by Guthrie, will soon visit The Playhouse.

The Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself will be explored in ‘Woody Guthrie: Hard Times & Hard Travelin’ on Saturday 8 November, 8pm.

Written and Performed by singer, multi-instrumentalist and Professor Will Kaufman, audiences will be treated to hard-hitting Guthrie songs from ‘Vigilante Man’, and ‘I Ain’t Got No Home’ to other songs of the Depression Era - from Joe Hill’s ‘The Preacher and the Slave’ to ‘Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?’.

A Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of Central Lancashire, Will Kaufman has written a number of books on American culture and consultant to Johnny Depp and Douglas Brinkley for the publication of their co-edited edition of Guthrie’s recently discovered novel, House of Earth (2013).

“These renditions, with historical commentary, exemplify the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie’s most powerful and evocative work” Max Beer at The Playhouse said.
