Work at what’s being billed as a state of the art care home in Derry is now underway after being given the green light by planners.
Avondale Nursing Home on the Culmore Road has been taken over by Dr. Brendan McDonald who currently runs the Slievnamon facility in Omagh. SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins says the ongoing work at the formerly delapidated site on the Culmore Road is being welcomed in the local area.
“On a day when we’ve learned that some care homes in the North West were given a reprieve after being earmarked for closure, I’m delighted to be able to say that Avondale will compliment the existing services that we have here in the city.
“We have a duty of care to our older people, and providing a proper level of care for them in the right surroundings means that their families as a result feel more at ease. I know that from personal experience, it is difficult thinking about what the best way forward is for elderly relatives and I believe that having been to Dr. McDonald’s care home in Omagh, he is a great person to be spearheading this new addition to the local community.
