The Tree of Remembrance, run by the Rotary Club, is back this Christmas raising much needed funds to help those struggling to make ends meet.

Visitors can write special messages in memory of loved ones and donations will be raised for food hampers given to those most in need in the local community.

The Tree, which marks its fifth Christmas this year, gives the people of the city the opportunity to remember friends and family in a simple yet poignant way during the Christmas rush.

The message is written on a yellow ribbon which is then tied to the huge tree stationed at the Orchard Street entrance of Foyleside Shopping Centre.

Individuals can make a voluntary donation in a collection box which provides funds for the food hampers and other Rotary charities.

Last year saw thousands of people leaving messages, and almost 7000 ribbons were hoisted up onto the tree.

Rotarians, with the support of the local Probus Club, Inner Wheel and family members, will be at the Tree for 126 hours over the two week period.

Rotary President Jeremy Arthur said: “Donations raised last year provided a large amount of food hampers to local families. This would not have been possible without the generosity of the people of Derry -Londonderry and the many visitors to the city who have taken our Tree of Remembrance to their heart.” The Tree will be officially launched tomorrow.
