I read with interest the article in Tuesday’s Journal rearding Derry missing out on much needed European funding due to City Council indifference.
When Derry lost out to Omagh for the Headquarters of the Western Education and Library Board, the then Secretary of state offered the City Council the Northern Ireland Office of the European Economic Community (now European Union). Sadly this was turned down by the short-sighted SDLP-dominated Council as only being a sop.
The office, of course, went to Belfast, who put it to very good use. It would appear that the SDLP has not learned much since.
