Sir,

The tenth anniversary of the death of Jean Heaney, Maybrook Dairy, Derry, a mother to nine boys and six girls, took place on August 30, 2011.

The Heaney family gathered in late August this year for a special 10th Anniversary Mass to celebrate the life of our truly gifted mother.

It was decided, after the Mass, amongst the Heaney girls, that the family should do something innovative on Saturday, 1st October, 2011, to mark our late mother’s birthday.

In the final years of mum’s life, she suffered from Alzheimer’s, which meant she needed twenty-four hour, one-to-one care. Every member of the family helped to look after her but we still needed outside help.

The Alzheimer’s Society was an enormous, much-needed support, providing us with vital information about the disease.

To celebrate our mum’s life, we decided to organise a Heaney Family Memory Walk across the Peace Bridge in Derry.

Afterwards, as we sat around the table reminiscing, the two words that kept coming up were ‘Food’ and ‘Faith’.

We inherited our love of healthy food from both our parents. Sunday dinner was the highlight of the week.

Each one of us attributes our strong faith to our parents, Jean and Joe.

The only thing left to say is thank you to my family for being so generous in giving of their time and for their kind donations to Alzheimer’s Patients’ Comfort Fund.

Yours,

Mena Heaney
