It was fitting the the “Journal” acknowledged the sad passing of Derry born author, Fr Walter Hegarty (2/3/12). I first became aware of the name of Walter Hegarty in the early eighties. A friend encouraged me to read his much-neglected first novel ‘The Price of Chips’. I did so. The novel is a memorable and rewarding read. It is a vivid portrayal of growing up in Derry before the onset of the ‘Troubles’. ‘The Price of Chips’ is, in my humble opinion, the best of Hegarty’s works. It has been too long out of print. I hope the ‘Year of Culture’ remembers and celebrates the works of Walter Hegarty.
