Monday, 26th September, saw the sad death of one of Derry’s true Republicans, namely Phil Doherty.
First and foremost Phil was a family man, but during the Troubles his door was always open to those who needed help.
This was reflected in the large turnout on Monday night, when his Tricolour draped coffin was carried all the way from William Street to his daughter’s home in the Brandywell. And also on Thursday, when his remains were carried to the Long Tower Chapel for his Requiem Mass, then also carried the whole way after Mass to the City Cemetery for burial.
A fitting tribute to a true Republican whom I was proud to know. May he Rest In Peace.
