Sinn Féin Councillor Peter Anderson has called on local pensioners over the age of 70 who are living alone to check if they are eligible for a new rate relief scheme.
Explaining how the lone pensioner allowance works, Colr. Anderson said; “A new allowance was introduced in April that will give pensioners over the age of seventy living on their own a 20% reduction on their rates
“At a time when more and more pensioners are finding it hard to make ends meet due to rising costs this benefit is a welcome addition in helping pensioners manage their income.
“This new allowance is not means tested so it does not depend on income or savings to be eligible. In certain circumstances some people over 70 who do not live alone may still be eligible so I would encourage all pensioners to enquire if they qualify.
“To find out if they qualify for this benefit pensioners should phone the helpline number 0845 300 6360,” he said.
