The newly appointed deputy leader designate of the DUP Nigel Dodds may be the MP for North Belfast but he also has close ties to the North West.
The 49 year-old politician was appointed deputy leader of the DUP on Monday as Peter Robinson was formally named as Ian Paisley’s successor.
Mr Dodds was born in Derry in 1958 and grew up in the Prehen area of the city before moving to Belfast where he began his political career. While in Derry, the North Belfast MP attended primary school in Newbuildings before continuing his education at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
His appointment as deputy leader of the DUP was announced by the party’s Assembly group on Monday morning and is expected to be ratified as a meeting of the party’s officers on Thursday evening.
