The redevelopment of the former British Army base at Ebrington into a economic asset is the best symbol for the future of Derry, according to Junior Minister Gerry Kelly.
The Minister made the remark as he and his fellow Junior Minister, Jeffrey Donaldson, visited the city for a tour of the Ebrington site.

During their visit they met with representatives from ILEX who briefed them on the regeneration plans for the
site and for the Fort George site on the cityside.

Speaking during his visit, Mr Kelly said; "Ilex is an innovative approach to regeneration, bringing together local and central government with other experts in the field to create a vibrant mixed and sustainable economy.

Future

"What better symbol for the future of this city than converting a disused military base into an engine for economic regeneration. I look forward to returning to see the new piazza, which will be the largest public space in the city, " he added.

Mr Donaldson said the redevelopment plans will held improve relations between people on the cityside and Waterside. "These two sites create wonderful opportunities for the regeneration and revitalisation of the economy for the city. In particular, the proposed new foot and cycle bridge from Ebrington to the city side will help to bridge the emotional and cultural divide which has existed for so long," he said.
