I was asked to be a judge for part of a charity music event at the weekend. Now making an eejit of myself is something I am more than qualified in doing. However making an eejit of myself whilst filling in for Louie Walsh in the X-Factor style competition was an opportunity that I couldn't miss. The night was to help raise money for Children in Crossfire and was held in McCourt's Bar in Ardmore.
The participants were the staff of Foyle View school versus Ardmore locals, and although entrants were supposed to be judged on their singing abilities alone, their choice of song, the clothes they were wearing and bizarre body movements (mainly from
one contestant who still thought it was 1992 and had taken time out as a roadie on a Guns and Roses tour) also came into play. Being a man of few words, I left much of the criticism to my fellow judges. Playing the role of the acid-tongued Sharon Osbourne was a local lass, who may not have had the same amount of cosmetic surgery, but was much more hotter, younger and madder. Taking Simon Cowell's place was a much more mature gentleman from the village. He wore his trousers a lot higher but definitely had a much better hair rinse.

First up was a Vivienne Westwood look-alike. She decided to sing a track by Madness which we all thought was quite apt, considering how she was manoeuvring herself around the stage. Nevertheless, she was great and I found her very entertaining. At one stage someone from Foyle View thought it would be a good idea to invite the Pussy Cat Crows up to sing with him; I cannot even remember what track he chose. However one thing I do know and is that the screeching noise will haunt me forever. The funniest moment of the night for me was when someone dressed as Tom Jones was made to sing a Chris De Burgh track as there were technical problems with the Welsh crooners 'Green Green Grass of Home'. The sight of him with a curly afro wig, partially opened shirt and locks of chest hair on show whilst singing 'Lady in Red' was comedy gold.

I think it took a while for some of the opponents of the Ardmore crew to get used to the humour, especially towards the beginning of the evening and it's true, you'd need a thick skin to drink in Mc Courts, but all-in-all everyone had a great night's craic and one the best events I'd been to in a while. Of course the night wouldn't have been complete without a great compere and I could see the not-so Tina Turner performer had also been taken in by his charms. He was obviously a massive fan of mine and mentioned how much he loved me in Big Brother 4, though that show aired in 2003 whilst I was still in nappies.

Long after Killywill singing Mexicans, Ardmore Elvis impersonations and Foyle Views Will and Grace singing the Gloria Gaynor classic 'I Will Survive', we finally chose our winner. She was a member of Foyle and sang Alanis Morrisette's 'Ironic.' Although at the time I stated that the only thing ironic about her performance was the fact that she thought she could sing it in the first place, I was obviously only having a bit of banter and actually thought it was a great rendition.

Maybe next time I can swap my role as the camp judge for one of the contestants, though I don't know if my Riverdance routine will be accepted as an entry. We shall see.

Seány.
