IT WAS another hectic weekend of local cricket with action in both the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup and the Club Turf Ulster Cup as well as pivotal league matches in both divisions of the Long’s SuperValu League.

Congratulations to Brigade after Mark Simpson’s side recovered to beat a strong Civil Service N.I. outfit at Eglinton on Sunday in a game that swung one way then the other all afternoon.

But no such joy for Donemana on Saturday after an indifferent batting performance cost them a place in the All-Ireland Final when they were beaten by Leinster side, Merrion.

Coleraine have taken outright leadership of the Division One title race after a thumping win against Bready on Sunday but the pack are right on their heels as Strabane and Limavady also won.

Matches in Hand

Donemana’s Cup successes now mean they have 4 matches in hand but Richard Kee’s side remain bang in the picture as well. Eglinton now lead the Division Two table after winning twice at the weekend while nearest challengers St. Johnston lost at Burndennett.

Club Turf Ulster

Cup Final

Brigade claimed the Club Turf Ulster Cup for the third time on Sunday when proving too strong for NCU side, Civil Service North, at Eglinton. The pitch was certainly offering assistance to the bowlers and the visitors used it well to get on top early.

Iftikhar Hussain was in determined mood, however, and his 32 were valuable runs but at 86 for 6, and with Johnny Thompson and Harry Chappell both out without scoring the Beechgrove side looked in trouble. Dean Curry (34) and Christopher Dixon (27) then rallied to propel the North-West side towards a decent total and they would have been more than happy to finish with 150. John Costain with 3 and Pat Fisher with 2 were the main wicket-takers for CSNI.

The Belfast side’s reply never really got going in the face of some superb bowling from Mark Simpson (4-28), Mark Snodgrass (2-19) and Thompson (2-24) and despite cameos from Griffin Nieuwoudt (26), Allan Coulter (25) and Nigel Jones (21), they were 43 runs short at the end. Dean Curry was given the ‘man-of-the-match’ award by sponsor Keith Underwood, the youngster along with Dixon and Snodgrass beginning to show real character for the reigning champions.

At Eglinton, Brigade beat Civil Service North by 43 runs.
