The 26 year-old has made 128 appearances for SV Grodig in the Austrian League from 2008-2015 where he was a crowd favourite, scoring 17 goals before complications stemming from a heart issue ruled him out of football for 21 months.

A former FC Redbull Salzburg youth member, Schubert, has been training with Derry City and travelled on the team coach to Cork at the weekend.

Derry City manager, Kenny Shiels believes the player is the perfect fit for his team and hopes to get him on board as soon as possible.

“He’s played over 100 games in the Austrian league,” said the Derry boss. “He has good pedigree and fits into our budget which is hard because for every 10 you try to get, you get one.

“We wanted someone who can fit into our style of play and he certainly does. We’ve got to get the right type of player who can play with intensity and put pressure on and he fits into how the team plays. It’ll be second nature to him.

“We’re waiting on international clearance for him now,” confirmed Shiels. “You never know when that will be ready. You can’t predict these things.”
