steelstown brian ogs

Last week’s GAA Cúl Camps were a roaring success with up to 115 children coming in through the gates of Páirc Bríd every day between Monday and Friday. These were record numbers for the club and the second highest in the county and a huge congratulations to all involved in organizing such a successful week, to Bernie McMonagle and Neil Forester and all the coaches and helpers. You are a credit to the club.

There are two more camps coming up this summer to look forward to. Campa Charlene is now FULLY BOOKED for July 21st - 25th as we have restricted the number to 35 places to ensure quality in its first year. Again the number of volunteers coming forward with Irish has exceeded what we expected therefore we won’t need any more help at this camp. This camp will suit Boys and Girls, 9 - 14 yr olds and is 10.00am - 2.30pm each day, costs £10 per child, If you wish to be placed on a waiting list in case there are cancellations please reply on Facebook or on 07872612445 to Bernie McMonagle.

Steelstown Brian Óg’s own Camp will take place from August 18th- 22nd and there are spaces still available. Application forms can be collected at the Clubhouse, or let us know on Facebook if you wish to reserve a space.

We have 65 names already. Cost £25/£20/£15/£10 depending on number of children in family To Suit 6yrs-13yrs, 5yr olds will be allowed if they are already club members, 5 days, Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 2.30pm

Any Queries please contact Bernie McMonagle on 07872612445.

The U14 boys will look to build on their league success when they take on Ballinascreen in the first round of the championship next Tuesday.

The game is away to Ballinascreen with throw-in time set for 7.15pm. Please make a big effort to get out and support the Óg’s and help make sure this is just the start of another fruitful campaign.

There are two other big championship dates to mark in your diaries in the coming weeks, both involving our senior teams and both taking place at Owenbeg.

First up is our senior in the first round of the Derry Senior Football Championship. This game is headlining Saturday’s bout of games on August 2nd and is taking place at 7pm at Owenbeg on the Saturday night. A week later, on Sunday 10th August, our senior ladies are in action in the Junior ‘A’ Championship final against Faughanvale. This game takes place at 1.30pm at Owenbeg as well. Make sure you free it up!

The U14 girls are on a winning streak. After defeating Coleraine last week, the city side came out on top against Limavady on Tuesday night at the pitch with a fine 6-12 to 5-7 win in a thrilling encounter.

The Steelstown Brian Óg’s U14 girls notched up another victory in their North Derry League campaign away against Coleraine Eoghan Rua.

With both teams missing key players during the holiday season this was an opportunity for the others to step up and for the emerging U12 girls from both sides to make their mark and it was the Steelstown side that came out top. Fantastic performances throughout the Ogs team from defence to attack, most notably the scoring from Evie Doherty, Cliodhna Nelis, Caithlin Gallagher and the on-form Nicole Campbell to supplement the usual goal and points scoring from Aoife Collins, Clodagh Laverty and Catherine McGuigan. Well done girls and thanks to the Coleraine hosts for an excellent match.

The Seniors played Craigbane last Sunday away. A slow start cost Pearses dearly - however a much improved second half performance saw Pearses chipping away at the Craigbane lead and several missed goal chances which would have left it a one point game. However it wasn’t to be and Craigbane ran out worth winners in the end on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-08. A lot of positives can be taken from the much improved second half performance and the return to Pearses of the impressive Caolan Doyle. Next up for the seniors is a home fixture tonight (Friday) against Claudy with a 8.00pm throw-in

The under 16 camogs are starting to put a string of results together and are building nicely as the season progresses towards championship. They drew with Drumsurn on a scoreline on 2-02 each. Some players are really starting to find their feet at this grade which bodes well for the future. Ciara Foley, Aoibhe McCarron, Blaithnáid McElhom, Jane McMonagle, Sophie Brady and Niamh McCullough put in very good performances and were supported very well by all others throughout the pitch.

The Under 12 lads travelled to O’Cathains and came away with a good result scoring 2-11 in a half hour’s hurling. The team was Liam Dunne, Tom Burns, Carrick McLaughlin, Martin McCarron(0-2), Eoin McCloskey(2-1), Michael Moore (0-2),Padhraig Nelis (0-4), Oran Kelly and Conán McCarron (0-2).

The club had a good representation at the development squads this week and we encourage all players to attend to strengthen club and county hurling.

The club would like to thank both Alan Grant and Barry Robinson for their commitment to Derry this year and commiserate with Derry set up after their narrow defeat against Antrim in last Sunday’s enthralling Ulster Senior Final at Owenbeg. Good Luck for 2015!
