Lavey 4-02, Na Magha 0-04

Lavey went into this game as red hot favourites against Na Magha, the city side denied in the past by the young Erin’s Own hurlers at this level.

Lavey were also able to field 10 of the starting 15 that defeated Magherafelt in the ‘A’ football final, including Callum Murray who scored a hat-trick of goals that day and came up with another hat-trick in the hurling decider.

Cormac Collins, Niall Duggan; Jack Scullion, Ryan McGill, Jamie Duggan; Joseph Duggan; Matthew Downey, Callum Murray, Enda Downey and Ryan Farrell were the dual players who completed the ‘double’ at Owenbeg last Saturday morning.

But, in the first half, for most of the 20 minutes, Na Magha keeper Keelan Doherty produced a string of saves that kept Lavey’s marksmen at bay.

Indeed in the first minute he deflected a close range pile-driver from Odhran Melaugh over the bar. From that to the last minute, this was a compelling duel with the diminutive net-minder excelling.

Inspired by their keeper, Na Magha hit three points between 15th and 18th minutes, with Michael Lynch pointing a free, Keelan Roddy and Joshua Boyle following up with minors from open play.

In the final minute of the half Enda Downey crossed the sliothar from the left wing and Callum Young blasted the sliothar to the net when it dropped in the goalmouth.

On the restart Pauric Nelis pointed a free in the fourth minute to level the scores but from there Lavey’s pressure started to pay dividends as Na Magha’s defence crumbled.

On 10 minutes, Matthew Downey pointed a free for 1-02 to 0-04, goals from Young in the 12th minute and Enda Downey two minutes later putting the outcome beyond doubt. In the final minute, Young added the fourth goal to give Lavey a commanding 10-oint victory.

After the final whistle Tomas Cassidy, representing sponsors T Mackle, presented the Feile Shield to Lavey captain, Ryan McGill.
