Creggan Swifts ended Phoenix Swifts’ hopes of a clean sweep of Saturday Morning League trophies when lifting the Blue Riband Cup.
Second half goals from Brian McClean and PJ Ward proved enough to settle this contest played at a rain-soaked Brandywell Stadium on Saturday.
With a lot of surface water on the pitch it was never going to be conducive to a fluid, passing game of football.
Phoenix Swifts, however, settled into the game quicker and in the opening 10 minutes Creggan Swifts found it difficult to get out of their own half.
Indeed, Phoenix continued to press but failed to unlock the Creggan defence and it came as no surprise when the game remained deadlocked at half-time.
At the start of the second half Creggan won a corner kick and when Phoenix keeper, Conleth McCrudden failed to claim the ball it fell kindly to the feet of Brian McClean who sent the ball into the net.
That goal seemed to spark life into Creggan and they were now pressing high up the park.
Phoenix, however, remained dangerous but on 58 minutes Creggan added a second.
A back pass from Hargan slowed to a halt in the surface water and PJ Ward delicately lobbed over the head of the helpless McCrudden.
Phoenix made changes in an attempt to get back into the contest, introducing extra firepower to their attack but it proved too little, too late as Creggan comfortably held on to their two goal advantage.
Phoenix, to their credit, continued to push Creggan back but the comeback failed to materialise as the Creggan defence stood tall to ensure they collected their first major trophy.
