SUNDERLAND winger, James McClean believes his former teammate and good friend, Danny Lafferty would be a welcome addition at the Stadium of Light.
Having developed an effective partnership with the much sought-after Derry City left-back during the last two seasons at Brandywell, McClean is in no doubt Lafferty has what it takes to make a successful move across the Channel.
Lafferty has been linked with several English clubs recently including West Ham, Brighton and most recently Derby where his trial was cut short due to a hamstring injury.
The former Celtic defender has also attracted interest from Sunderland and McClean believes he would benefit from a move to Wearside should it materialise.
“I played with Danny even before Derry when we were with N.Ireland Under-21s and there’s no doubt he’s a great player,” he said. “I would love to see him get a move because he deserves it. Hopefully things materialise for him and he gets a move across the water.
“I’ll definitely put a good word in for him with the Sunderland coaches. It’s not me being biased because he’s one of my best mates, but he’s got the talent and last season was proof of how good he really is.”
