Derry City lost their opening fixture of the 2011 League of Ireland Premier Division to Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell on Friday evening.
Sligo snatched all three points on offer when second half substitute Aaron Greene blasted the ball past Gerard Doherty in the 88th minute.
Derry will be disappointed not to have at least taken a point from the game and they had the chance to take the lead just before half-time when referee Damien Hancock awarded a penalty after Gareth McGlynn was brought down inside the box by Jason McGuinness.
Up stepped debutante Eamon Zayed whose spot-kick lacked any sort of directed and was hit straight at Sligo goalkeeper Brendan Clarke.
Stephen Kenny’s men did go on to create further chances but they could not find the target.
The introduction of David McDaid towards the end of the game seemed to give Derry an extra dimension as the searched for a equaliser but despite three long range efforts from outside the area he could not force the ball past Clarke.
Derry’s next match is away to UCD at the UCD Bowl on Friday March 11.
