Derry City romped to a 4-0 victory over cross-border rivals Finn Harps in the second round of the F.A.I. Cup at the Brandywell on Friday night.
Two goals from Stephen McLaughlin and one a piece from Rory Patterson and Barry Molloy ensured that Derry marched into the third round.
It was a match that the Candy Stripes dominated from start to finish but the night belonged to the skill and craft of Owen Morrison.
Morrison set McLaughlin up for his second goal and his pass for Rory Patterson’s strike was sublime.
Conversation was dedicated to whether on loan Derry City player would play for Harps before kick-off. Burnfoot lad McMonagle was named in the squad but didn’t play. Player/manager Peter Hutton filled in for the 21 year-old defender at the heart of defence.
Derry finished the game with ten men when Mark Farren was forced to leave the field of play after straining his calf muscle.
Harps had lost five on the bounce before Friday’s game but Derry’s victory is their fourth consecutive win all competitions.
Next up for the Candy Stripes is a league fixture against Shelbourne at the Brandywell on Friday June 1. Kick-off 7.45p.m.
