The money, from the Social Investment Fund, was signed off last Thursday evening.

It’s seen as the final part of the jigsaw in the funding required to redevelop the ground.

A further £1.2 million for Leafair Park and £600,000 for Pearse’s GAC from the fund has also been given the green light.

Derry City Council made a successful bid to the Social Investment Fund in 2013 but it is only now that the funds have been given the go ahead.

The local authority has already pledged £4.5m of the £6.2 million required.
