Derry sign Swifts defender
New Derry City signing Dermott McCaffrey.
Derry City manager Declan Devine has secured the signing of 25-year-old Dungannon Swifts player Dermott McCaffrey.
McCaffrey, a former Northern Ireland U-21 international, is a versatile defender and hails from Clogher in Co. Tyrone.
The left-sided player, who yesterday signed a two year contract with the Brandywell club, started his career in Scotland, spending time with Hibs, Queen of the South, Livingstone, Falkirk and Arbroath before returning home and signing for Dungannon in January 2010.
McCaffrey, who can play either at left back or in the heart of the defence, earned eight U-21 caps for Northern Ireland and has played more than 60 games for Dungannon, scoring seven goals.
Candy Stripes manager Declan Devine says McCaffrey’s addition to the side is a “great boost” for the club as it finalises its preparations for the new season.
“Dermott’s arrival at Brandywell not only adds versatility to our defensive set-up but it also brings experience to our young squad,” said the Derry boss.
“Dermott has years of cross-channel experience under his belt and this can only be a bonus as we prepare for the forthcoming season.”
Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon at the Riverside Stadium in Drumahoe, Institute FC’s dreams of a cup treble remained firmly on track when they came from behind to record a 3-1 victory over fellow Championship side Banbridge Town in the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup.
‘Stute secured their spot in the quarter-finals thanks to a brace of goals from Davitt Walsh and one from Declan McKeever.
