DERRY CITY boss, Declan Devine and goalkeeper, Gerard Doherty have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2012 Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland’s flagship awards.

Having guided the ‘Candy Stripes’ to FAI Cup victory last month, Devine has been nominated as one of three managers and three players who will contest the ‘Personality of the Year’ accolade.

Last season’s winner of the ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ award, Gerard Doherty, has once again been shortlisted having enjoyed a superb season between the sticks for his hometown club.

Also vying to claim the 53rd ‘Personality of the Year’ award are Sligo Rovers manager, Ian Baraclough who receives his first nomination having guided the ‘Bit O’Red’ to their first title in 35 years and could follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Paul Cook who was named as the award’s winner in 2010.

Drogheda United boss Mick Cooke is also in the running, along with three players – Jason McGuinness, Danny Ventre and Mark Quigley – who played key roles in Sligo’s Premier Division title success.

McGuinness and Ventre were both consistent forces in Sligo’s team and their influence played a big part in the League triumph. Recently-crowned PFAI Player of the Year Quigley was also a big player for the Bit O’Red.

For the ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’, Doherty is joined on the shortlist by Drogheda United’s Gabriel Sava and Sligo Rovers’ Gary Rogers.

The competition for both awards is fierce with all nominees recognised for helping either Sligo Rovers (Premier Division), Derry City (FAI Ford Cup) or Drogheda United (EA Sports Cup) lift trophies.

SWAI Personality of the Year nominees - Declan Devine (Derry City), Mick Cooke (Drogheda United), Ian Baraclough (Sligo Rovers), Jason McGuinness, Danny Ventre, Mark Quigley (Sligo Rovers).

SWAI Goalkeeper of the Year nominees - Gerard Doherty (Derry City), Gabriel Sava (Drogheda United), Gary Rogers (Sligo Rovers).

The prestigious awards will be presented at the Airtricity/SWAI Annual Banquet in Dublin’s Conrad Hotel on Friday, January 11th.
