Derry footballer Mark McChrystal has been given a season long deal with League One side Tranmere Rovers.

The registration of the 26-year-old former Derry City centre back requires international clearance, so it is thought he will make his debut during the League One fixture against Walsall at Prenton Park on Saturday, January 8.

Mark described the deal as an “opportunity he couldn’t decline.

“It’s always been my ambition to return to England and try to play at the highest level possible since I left Wolves. I’ve never given up hope of one day returning to test myself again across the water.

“Football has always been my job and as the Tranmere offer is full-time, I think I owe it to myself to give it another go and I can’t afford to turn it down.

“League One is a very competitive division with former top clubs such as Charlton, Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday all involved. It will be a great challenge and it’s one that I believe I must take on as this could be my last chance.”

McChrystal’s career also saw himspend time on the books of Partick Thistle and Huddersfield Town.

McChrystal had a two-week trial at Prenton Park in late October and early November.

Tranmere manager Les Parry said: “Mark will be signing at the beginning of next week until the end of the season and we will have the option of another year with him.

“The loan system has been fantastic for us and we’ve been able to bring in players that generally, we would not be able to afford.

“But there’s nothing like having your own players. One of the areas we have struggled to cover because of injuries is centre half.

“We brought Mark in the two weeks at the end of October when he trained with us and played in a couple of friendlies.

“ He is an experienced player who was with Wolves for a number of years. He is a leader.”
