‘We have trained more than any club in the league’ - claims Collins

But with quite a few “Candy Stripes” fans expected to attend that fixture given that the gate receipts were to be donated to former striker, Mark Farren, it was clear that the fixture was in difficulty following the heavy fall of snow on Tuesday afternoon.

“I wanted the game to be played for a number of reasons - not forgetting that the proceeds were to aid Mark Farren’s recovery - but the pitch was covered with snow andthe likelihood was that it would have been very heavy with so much rain following the snow.

“But I would never get carried away with the postponement of pre-season games, it’s happened to me so many times in the past and I’ve no doubt it will continue in the future,” continued Collins.

“Friendly games are obviously good to have, but they are not the real deal. They are rarely competitive and you get very little out of them other than watching players perform and trying out new systems.

“So I’m not overly worried that we’ve managed to get just a few matches under our belts to date.

“Every player will play on adrenalin during the opening games of the new season, that’s what it’s all about.

“We’ve probably trained more than any other club in the country given our facilities, so I’m happy that we’re making progress and the players are getting fitter and stronger with every session.”

Now keen to add another striker to his squad, the Dubiner also suggested that there was “another position” he had hoped to have cover for, but opted to spend the remainder of his budget on Akanni-Sunday Wasiu.

PROBLEM TO BE SORTED

FROM WITHIN SQUAD

Refusing to identify the position which had been causing him concern, Collins held the view that he could sort it out with cover provided by members within the current squad.

“To be totally honest, I did have another player in mind, but I couldn’t guarantee that I would get him.

“In fact, at this stage I probably wouldn’t have got him until July, so I’ve decided to find the cover I need from within the squad and I’m confident I can do just that.

“The budget will have been spent should Sunday and I gain agreement and I’m very happy with the squad I have assembled.

“The players are training with a smile on their faces, we’ve no injury worries and everything has gone well.”
