The Desmond Motors sponsored McAlinden Cup takes centre stage on Sunday with holders and league champions, Top of the Hill Celtic facing a difficult test against Park Bar at Lisnagelvin.
Brandywell Harps have already qualified for the next round while Oxford take on Tristar and Campbell’s meet Trojans for their place in the draw for the semi-finals.
In Section One of the City Cabs League Cup, Brandywell Harps play Lisahally and in Section Two Culmore Colts host O’Diochian’s.
Fixtures - McAlinden Cup: Oxford v Tristar (Swilly); Campbell’s v Trojans (Lisnagelvin 4); Top of the Hill Celtic v Park Bar (Lisnagelvin 2); City Cabs League Cup - Brandywell Harps v Lisahally (Showgrounds); Culmore Colts v O’Diochian’s (St Columb’s 2).
Oxford Stars v Tristar
In the last round of this Blue Riband Cup Stars put nine past Lisahally. Oxford boss, Paul Roddy fielded a very strong side that day and if he does the same on Sunday, Tristar will certainly find themselves up against it.
Tristar always seem to make their exit in the early stages of the knockout competitions so team boss, Chris McGarrigle will be hoping to make it through to the semi-finals this season.
Oxford to win.
Campbell’s v Trojans
Campbell’s will go into this cup tie as the underdogs but that is the way James McGinlay likes it!
On the opening day of the season at this venue they defeated the Creggan men in the league. Paul Higgins’ Trojans side have been in the final of this competition for the past two seasons, narrowly losing out on each occasion.
If they can get a full strength side out for this tie then they will be fancied to advance.
Trojans to win.
Top of the Hill Celtic v Park Bar
Celtic will be looking to get revenge on Park for their Terry Kelly Cup defeat last month.
Colin Logue’s side have already got the Premier Division trophy under their belts but would like to retain this old trophy.
They defeated Trojans in last year’s decider and they could go all the way once again this year should they get past this significant hurdle.
Park have been blowing hot and cold this season but Colm Cassidy knows that anything less than a full strength side in this tie will probably signal the end of their win in this season’s competition.
City Cabs League Cup
Brandywell Harps v Lisahally
This is Harps’ first match in this section so Liam Deery will be hoping his young side get off to a winning start.
They have had a good season to date. Finishing runners-up in the Premier Division and already in the McAlinden Cup semi-finals. Lisahally lost their first game so Spike Doherty knows a defeat on Sunday would make it difficult to finish in the top two and a place in the semi-finals. Harps to win.
Culmore Colts v O’Diochian’s
Colts lost their two league games heavily to O’Diochian’s so Donal Dorrian will not exactly be looking forward to this clash on Sunday. This is a very tough section for the young Culmore side.
O’Diochian’s are fresh from their First Division triumph so Joe McBrearty’s men will travel to the Point in confident mood.
