DOWNEY’S have become the latest Premier Division team to withdraw from the Derry & District F.A. having ended their seven year association with the league this week.
Hot on the heels of Gainsborough’s withdrawal from the First Division, The Shipquay Street based club’s manager, Gerard McFarland called time on the club’s participation in the league having struggled to field a team throughout the season.
The club entered the league in 2004, winning promotion to the top flight five years later and finished runners-up in the 2011 McAlinden Cup Final.
Therefore only three fixtures in the Premier Division take place this weekend as leaders, Top of the Hill Celtic face a tricky game against Don Bosco’s; Three Flowers play Lisahally while Tristar meet Porter’s.
Every team has been awarded maximum points following the withdrawal of Downey’s and there will be no relegation while the top two in Division One will still be promoted.
In the First Division Oxford play third placed Oakgrove, while second placed Culmore take on promotion rivals, Phoenix. Elsewhere, Campbell’s meet A.O.H. Harps while Ballymoor face Strand United.
