Letterkenny & NW District League 2, Sligo/Leitrim 2
KAILAN BARLOW netted the decisive strike as Sligo/Leitrim secured the U12 Foyle Cup trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout ended 4-3 at Brandywell.
This U12 showpiece was lit up by a magical individual goal from Letterkenny’s Adam Murphy who dribbled past three defenders inside the penalty area before slotting calmly past goalkeeper, Eanna Clancy on four minutes.
And the Co. Donegal lads should really have added a second on 12 minutes when Murphy’s inviting corner kick was met by the head of Josh Bradley but his effort went narrowly over.
Sligo/Leitrim grew in confidence and managed an equaliser on 24 minutes with a powering header from Caelan Hunt. It was no more than they deserved and the teams went in level at the break.
Letterkenny’s bustling striker, Bradley was causing no end of problems and he dispossessed a Sligo/Leitrim defender and ran towards goal but his low strike to the near post was saved by the outstretched foot of the keeper and the danger was averted.
Bradley was through on goal once again with 10 minutes to go but the Sligo/Leitrim goalkeeper came to claim bravely at his feet.
It was a frantic end to the game and Dylan Walsh put Sligo/Leitrim ahead with a stunning strike from distance with eight minutes to go.
That lead didn’t last long, however, as Bradley latched onto a ball over the top and sent his half volley into the corner of the net.
Sligo/Leitrim could have snatched victory at the death but John Kenny sent his shot across goal and agonisingly wide.
This one was to be decided on penalties and it was Sligo/Leitrim who emerged victorious 4-3 in the shootout as Barlow netted the decisive spotkick.
