Groups decided as Foyle Cup moves to knock-out stages

The final Group standings of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup were decided on another thrilling day of competition across the North West on Wednesday.

The day kicked off at the sunny Oakland Park in 26 degree heat where Oxford FC and Newhill FC took to the pitch to battle it out in the U14 section. It was Oxford who took the early advantage however when midfielder Nathan Breslin was taken down 30 yards from goal and Ryan McCauley stepped up to brilliantly dispatch the free-kick and put his team one up.

McCauley saw another free-kick minutes later saved by Newhill keeper Ryan Martin and this seemed to spur the Newhill boys on. After winning a corner, Sean Duffy headed home from the resulting set-piece to bring it level. The big striker then did superbly for his second goal five minutes later, chasing down a ball back to the keeper and stealing in front of the keeper to finish well.

Newhill continued to dominate the half from there and got two more from corners with Ryan Cush and Darren Donnelly getting in on the act to make it 4-1 at the break.

The second period continued in the same fashion with Newhill controlling the play. Oxford didn’t muster up much of a challenge as the half went on with Newhill very impressive in possession. Donnelly and Duffy in particular were composed on the ball and had some excellent touches. Caoimhin Beck added a fifth for Newhill in the closing stages from six yards out but the game had long been won and they were well worth the final 5-1 result.

Belfast team shock Institute

Among the 5pm kick-offs, Institute took on Loughside FC and it was the Belfast boys who started better but the game remained even in the opening minutes after Jordan Carruthers hadone ruled out for offside.

With the heat non-relenting, there was a minute’s water break for the players and for the second time in two days this gave Loughside a lift. Adam Kilen found himself in acres of space on the left and after he swung in a dangerous cross, Nathan Love could only head it into his own net, looping the ball over Adam Lamberton in the ‘Stute goal.

It didn’t take long for the local lads to pick up their game after the break with their first attack resulting in an equaliser. Jaime Adams was played in over the top and he dragged the ball past the keeper to leave himself an easy finish for 1-1.

It didn’t stay that way for very long though as Loughside went straight on the attack. Luke Watters won a corner for the Belfast side and after the ball broke to the edge of the box, captain Jordan Daves kept his head to put his side into the lead again with a side foot finish.

It was 3-1 a couple of minutes later and this time it was Carruthers for Loughside, staying on-side to slide his shot past Lamberton. Pearce Tait added to the scoring for the Shore Road team when Watters broke on a counter-attack and fired it across for the No. 10 to volley home from eight yards. Institute won a late penalty but it wasn’t to be their day as Rhys Baxter made a superb double save to keep the final score at 5-1.

Knock-out Stages

Many age groups are now moving into the knockout stages. At Under 10, Oak Athletic completed a clean sweep and finished their group with five wins from five - a feat matched by Glentoran, Ballymoney and Bertie Peacock Youths. They will now play in the quarter finals this morning (Thursday - See fixtures below).

At Under 11 only Letterkenny Rovers took maximum points and as such are seeded until the semi finals. The other seeded side is Peamount United with four wins and a draw. These two team will then play two teams emerging from Coleraine, Bertie Peacock Youths, Inishowen and Dungannon.

Civic Reception

On Wednesday evening, representatives of the competing teams and referees from across Europe attended a reception in Derry’ Guildhall hosted by Mayor of Derry, Cllr Brenda Stevenson.

Speaking at reception, Brian McDowell, Sales and Marketing Director at Hughes Insurance commented: “Hughes Insurance has been open in Derry for over six years now and we’re very proud to be involved with this city.

“We’re also proud to be title sponsors of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup - one of Europe’s best youth football tournaments.
