ST COLUMB’S recorded an historic treble, which is unparalleled in the history of schoolboy football in the north.
The Derry school won the under 12, under 14 and under 16 Umbro Schools Cup sin a sensational day at a busy Ballymena Showgrounds.
The day got off to a flying start for St Columb’s when the under 12 side beat Ashfield 2-0 on the 3G pitch behind the main stand.
Joe McCarty gave St Columb’s the lead with a stunning free kick in the first half, before young Matthew Doherty doubled his side’s lead in the second half with a tidy finish from a one on one situation.
The under 14s made it two from two, with a 1-0 victory over north Belfast side St.Malachy’s.
The goal came courtesy of a Mikhail Kennedy strike.
The treble was then completed when the under 16s saw off Laurelhill 1-0 in the Premier final.
It is the first time in the competition’s history that one side has won all three titles in the same year.
