Holders win as Gilfillan Cup kicks-off season

The Rathmor Pre MOT Centre Springtown North West Saturday Morning League got underway at the weekend with the traditional season opener, the Gilfillan Cup, taking centre stage.

In Group 2, Phoenix Swifts made a winning start defeating HML 3-1 while in Group 3 Sion Swifts were beaten 4-1 at home by Tamnaherin Celtic. The other game in Group 3 saw Oxford United defeat 10-man Collegians 4-1. In Group 4, holders Westbank made saw-off Collon Celtic while Art Deco and Hatmore Harps shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

In Group 6, Tristar found the pace a little to quick as they went down 3-0 against Strabane Athletic. In Group 7, Culmore were defeated by the odd goal in five to Newton Heath while Foyle Harps had a comfortable 3-0 win over Drumahoe.

In Group 8 Du Pont had a comfortable 4-1 win over Foyle Athletic while Clooney and Creggan Swifts had to settle for a point each in a 2-2 draw.
