THE 2013 Foyle Cup Finals Day ended triumphantly for one locally based club as Derry Colts claimed the Under-16 trophy at Brandywell Stadium on Saturday.
The young ‘Candy Stripes’ defeated Glentoran’s U16 representatives 2-1 in an exciting contest to end what was a hugely successful Foyle Cup tournament.
Indeed, it was a thrilling end to six superb days of football which saw 216 teams play an incredible 610 games in the Derry, Limavady, Tyrone and Donegal areas.
Donegal Schoolboys kicked-off the action on Saturday in the U14 final as they took on North Dublin Schools League.
However, the Donegal boys were left disappointed as they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat as the Dublin side were crowned champions.
Neither side could break the deadlock in the opening half, however, 15 minutes after the restart Dublin’s Jamie Hopkins side-stepped his man and struck a rasping shot past a helpless keeper.
It was soon 2-0 as Dublin took advantage of a tired Donegal side minutes later, Lee Rock with a composed volley following a dangerous free-kick to the front post.
Donegal looked dead on their feet and Dublin didn’t hold back, Darragh Nolan this time with an excellent finish.
Jason Grouse then rounded-off the scoring as North Dublin Schools ran out comfortable winners.
In the Under-12 showpiece Dungannon were going for their third Foyle Cup title in as many years against Glentoran.
Both teams cancelled each other out during the 90 minutes and the cup final was to be decided on penalties.
Glentoran keeper, Paul McLaughlin saved two and scored one of his own to set it up for Dylan Bell who converted the last spot kick, making it 3-1 to ensure victory for Dungannon.
The 3 p.m. kick-off in the Brandywell saw Derry Colts take on Glentoran on home turf in the U16 Foyle Cup final.
The local side were dominating proceedings and 10 minutes into the second half Stephen Mills’ half volley nestled into the top right hand corner from 25 yards.
Glentoran’s Sean O’Hanlon went up the other end minutes later and finish under the keeper to level matters.
However, Fionnbharr Harley finished cooly past the keeper to win the game as Derry Colts were crowned champions.
