LIMAVADY United is currently in the process of researching the club’s history and during that research, the club’s secretary, David Brewster, has recently unearthed a team from the 1949/50 season which included quite a few Derry based players.
The name of that team, Limavady Strollers, was a name the Co. Derry side played under during and after the war.
Limavady Strollers claimed the North-West City Cup after defeating Derry City Reserves in the 1949/50 final and the team included a number of Derry men.
Indeed, one such player was Brendan Bradley who had represented Derry City earlier that year while another player was the team captain, Neil Doherty. Both are understood to have been forwards.
The Derry players were named as - Patrick Brendan Bradley, who lived at 9 Philip Street; Neil Doherty 61 Lecky Road, (or Neal Doherty, 61 Nelson Street), Eddie O’Donnell, 22 Carrigans Lane, Andrew and Charles Glenn of 137 Lecky Road, James Barr 39 Nailors Row, Daniel McCallion 3 Donegal Street and Angus Mackey 31 Windmill Terrace.
Mr. Brewster would be very interested in hearing from anyone who knows or has any information on any of the above mentioned players or, indeed, any other player who may have played for Limavady at that time.
Mr. Brewster can be contacted at email@example.com or by telephone on: 028 777 68700.
