Deery did concede that the runaway league leaders just showed better experience and guile to claim all three points from Drumahoe.

“We were desperately unlucky against the league leaders, but you could see at times that we are a young team and they just saw it out,” he said.

“Even a short corner in the 93rd minute, wee things like that we have to learn and just put it into the box; you have to be really smart in this league in those situations and unfortunately on Saturday we shot ourselves in the foot at times.

“We just started a wee bit too slowly and conceded from one of their only two chances in the game.

“Marty (Gallagher) did well to pam the initial shot out; Ryan Morrow delays their player really well and Daryl (McDermott) also stopped his marker, but after that we have to have people busting a gut to get back in.

“Yes Marty made a super save but when you do so well to then defend the second ball, we still didn’t have enough numbers around the ball.”

For the third time this season, Town secured the win by the slimmest of margins and once again they took their opportunity, while ’Stute with Sammy Morrow in particular failed to take their chance.

“We probably could have been two up at half-time, Sammy’s through one on one and he had a header at the back post and a chance fell to Niall (Grace) but he was a wee bit slow to react to it,” he added.

“All the chances where ours and as I said looking back on the game, they had two chances, with two long balls over the top, they scored from one chance and the other hit the post.

“I think if we score they would have had to change a bit, as I felt they played very straight at times, with straight balls down our throats and we dealt with it really well; obviously we would have loved to have went in front but sometimes the luck goes against you.

“So it’s disappointing that we aren’t getting the wee breaks and I told the players that sometimes when you are top of the league you get those wee breaks and unfortunately on Saturday they didn’t fall for us.”
