James McClean has accused fans at his former club Sunderland of forcing him out of the Stadium of Light.
The Creggan man who sealed a move to Championship side, Wigan claimed he realised his ‘time was up’ when his own supporters began to boo him.
McClean added that his move to the ‘Lactics’ was nothing to do with his loss of form.
“Leaving the club was nothing to do with how I was playing,” said the former Derry City winger. “But it was definitely needed. My time was up at Sunderland, that’s why I asked to leave.
“It’s never nice when your own fans are booing you before you even get on the pitch.
“The season before I was the best thing since sliced bread.”
McClean started last Saturday’s Championship defeat at Bournemouth on the bench and replaced Jean Beausejour in the 56th minute.
